Bad Girls, Bad Girls. Whatcha gonna do?

I am woman. Watch me drive.
- Manal al-Sharif

BRITISH BORN with Sri Lankan Tamil decent, Maya also known as M.I.A (missing in action) is a singer/songwriter who's tunes are like world music mixed with hip-hop. It isn't until you see her videos and listen to her lyrics that you begin to realise it reflects heavy political movements. She isn't an artist who will ask you to align yourself with a particular political position like Yoko and Lennon but her music reminds you to reflect on all of the injustice in the world. Her Born Free music video (2010) was banned off Youtube due to the images of red haired adults and children being hunted down and shot at point blank by American militants.

Her newest video, "bad girls" incorporates the cultural rebellion of females in Saudi Arabia. even with such footage and ideas incorporated into her catchy music, there seems to be an underlining witty humour at work that helps lighten the message. Her latest clip presents a group of middle eastern females covered from head to toe, who are suppressed from driving due to religious laws but live it up in the dessert- westernised boy racer style. "Live fast, Die Young, Bad girls do it well" sings MIA empowering these woman to stand up for their rights and educating individuals like myself to spread awareness of the injustice. Unlike most musical artist these days, M.I.A hasn't allowed money to be the driving factor for her music videos and songs. I think if she wanted to, she could sell herself dancing in a bikini quite well, instead her uplifting tunes ironically illustrate the prejudices at work in the world.

she's your prostitute...

Lykke Li

What makes Lykke Li so likable you ask?
It may be her sweet and innocent sounding voice, in contrast the strong sexual lyrics she uses or it may well be her olsen-like fashion sense.

What captures me about Lykke Li is that I can visualize her shopping for second hand clothes with a couple of hot foreign friends dressed like hippies. I can see her pulling out the same dance moves as in her music videos but to her favorite tunes at some auspicious local cafe where all the "cool" kids go. She would speak her mind and sometimes come across a bit blunt. You could see her doing lines of white powder while all her unmatched bracelets and large rings bang on the mirror. Her heart would easily be broken because she would always go for the bad guys and she would be a little bit insecure always applying a little bit more black eyeliner in the uncleaned girls bathroom mirror.

Have a listen to her new song below and i'll let you decide whether she prefers a bottle of cold pilsner or a glass of fine merlot...

Dont pull your pants before i go down
Dont turn away this is my time
Dont make demands I dont take none
Just say a prayer that it gone get done
Dont pull your pants before i go down
Dont turn away this is my time
Like the shotgun need an outcome
I'm your prostitute, you gon get some
Like the shotgun need an outcome
I'm your prostitute, you gon get some

Go head go away low, but here i can do no harm
Go ahead go away low in my honey lovin arms
Go ahead go away low, where i can do no wrong
Got you around my finger like a lonely lovers charm
like a lonely lovers charm

And cause i can I'm gon' got west
Just like a man Im the fortress
Like the shotgun I cant be outdone
I'm your prostitute, you gon' get some
Like the shotgun needs an outcome
I'm your prostitue, you gone get some

Go head go away low, but here i can do no harm
Go ahead go away low in my honey lovin arms
Go ahead go away low, where i can do no wrong
Got you around my finger like a lonely lovers charm

the dog days are over...

when florence and the machine arrived in my life, I found what was missing.

she described herself in Teen Vogue as “a choir girl gone horribly, desperately wrong.”

my description of her...

a wild fiery red head with a catastrophic choir instrumental sound, vocals from a venus goddess, should of been born in the 70's, dances around in fields of green and brown, has a bohemic feel to her with a dark twist of a grim fairy tale, her videos portraying her skipping and drinking tea before being sent off to sea in a coffin.

I LOVE her.

I want to be her.

she is my girl crush.
so please enjoy her twisted love songs and let me know if you feel the same...

p.s. the xx does a cover of you've got the love.

xx

the xx makes some of my favourite sounds right now. i haven't been able to pick a favorite song because it changes everyday.

these are the songs that you fall in love to, break up to, lust over, think about, linger with and just have sex with. the lyrics alone are worth taking to bed.

the combination of male and female vocals make the xx signature sound and its addictive beat blended with the right instrumentals make you fall in love with them.

today's favorite lyrics are:

you, you still have all the answers
and you, you still have them too
and we, we live half in the day time
and we, we live half at night

watch things on VCRs, with me and talk about big love
I think we're superstars, you say you think we are the best thing

but you, you just know, you just do

when i find myself by the sea, in another's company by the sea
when I go out the pier, gonna die and have no fear
because you, you just know, you just do

watch things on VCRs, with me and talk about big love
I think we're superstars, you say you think we are the best thing

but you, you just know, you just do

taken by trees

please have a listen. you might like 'taken by trees' as much as me.

there isn't much that I feel I need
a solid soul and the blood I bleed
but with a little girl, and by my spouse,
I only want a proper house

- taken by trees; my boys

oh I don't want to settle down

I don't want to leave this town
I'm feeling lost and found

am I wild, wild, wild, wild, wild?

- taken by trees; lost and found
